Over the course of 30 years, this magical YA series by Garth Nix has grown and captivated the hearts of so many generations. If this is on your TBR list, prepare to be spellbound by a world of mages, spirits and supernatural abilities.
Welcome to The Old Kingdom, a magical land set in an alternate England of the past. Here, a young student called Sabriel discovers her father and protector of the kingdom is in danger and, together with a magical cat, sets out to rescue him. There is so much to love about this series, starting with its intricate magic system of free and chartered magic, fantastical locations, nuanced politics and takes on good and evil. While the first book follows Sabriel, the following titles will all have different protagonists within this world, and they are mostly strong female leads, which was rarely seen in the first years these books published.
This is a great introductory series if you are looking to get into fantasy as a genre, and it has been hailed as one of Sarah J Maas's biggest influences in her own writing. We recommend starting the series with the prequel Clariel.
